Questionnaire: Analysis

ANALYSIS:
I gathered the data from my questionnaire and I then imported this information into a bar-chart. I explained the reasons why I choose these specific questions also, how it would help me create and better my own music magazine.

What attacts you to a music magazine?

This shows what the targeted audiences get attracted to the most, out of the four; front page, top music downloads, freebies and cover-lines. A huge total of 20 people thought that the cover-lines attract them the most this therefore suggests that I should really think carefully when designing the cover-lines, it is very crucial as a huge 40% of people found the cover-line more attractive. Furthermore, I should still think about the front page very carefully as it was the second most voted and, the cover-lines are within the front page which matters a lot. Also, If I never took the front page into deep consideration then the magazine wouldn’t be very successful as the front page wasn’t thought about carefully. Finally, I will also take the ‘TOP MUSIC DOWNLOADS’ into consideration however, will not ably it on the front page as it wasn’t voted by many therefore, I will put the top downloads in the contents page as a fair about of people voted for it.

This shows how often people follow the music magazine and how many times is the magazine issued. This therefore suggests that a huge number of 30 people read magazines that publish monthly rather than the other options. Furthermore, this gives me an idea that I should publish my magazine ‘tune’ monthly as it was the greatest voted with 60% of people. Also, many music R&B magazines publish their magazines monthly. I have never come across a music magazine which publishes their magazine daily, weekly or fortnightly however, this was just to give me a vague idea of what my potential readers read.

What camera shots would attract you the most, on a front page?

The camera angle of the front cover is very crucial as it is the very first thing the readers see. Also, it has to fit the magazine in a whole like for example; the surroundings of the front cover like the cover-lines. Therefore, I would want the cover-line to be a border for the model in the front cover, as it creates this professional look about the magazine. The reason I asked this question was to vaguely get an understand from my potential readers of what shot would they like to see on the front page, these results show that 50% of the people I asked chose Close-up shot, the other 50% would rather see a Mid shot and no one thought that it would be appealing to have a low shot placed on the front cover. Finally, I have come to a conclusion that It would be more efficient and relevant if I used a Mid shot as the camera shot for the front cover, this is because; it Is used my many R&B magazines, such as VIBE. Therefore, this conforms to the R&B music magazine look.

This gives me a range of ideas of how to think about certain things within my magazine, the greatest voted is the ‘Content’. This therefore suggests that I have to carefully think about what I put on my cover-lines and all the other content within the front cover, as well as the contents page and double-paged article. Furthermore, I have to decide upon catchy and efficient cover-lines for the front cover that I will be designing. Also, the information within the double-paged article has to be very interesting in order to draw in the potential readers to therefore make this magazine very successful. Finally, I have to think about the pictures as well because, that does matter in a magazine as people look at the images within the content, by thinking carefully about the pictures, the clothing really matters as the model cannot be wearing the same outfit for the contents as the front cover. Therefore, I will then pick out different outfits for my model instead of having only one outfit for her, this makes the magazine automatically look very professional.

Analysis: fashion magazine

FIRST ANALYSIS:

Chelsea Clinton’s face is in front of the header showing that this magazine is well known enough that people can recognise the font. Also, the cell-lines have been placed around her framing her body. Also, the masthead is being the main picture, meaning that the company ‘vogue’ is confident the people will recognise the title even though it is not fully recognised.

The red carpet behind the header suggests that there is going to be interviews/ articles on Celebrities. Additionally, the colour scheme has been kept within two standard colours; black and gold, this is to empathise that this magazine is aimed at females.

An issue date as been placed right underneath the title similar to the first magazine analysis this is very often being used.

On the right side of the front-page the big eye catcher, “120 years”. This is a huge number and it can give the reader an idea that this magazine is well established and popular. Also, the repetition of the word ‘The’ suggests that this magazine is established. Also, the ending of each line ends with the letter‘s’ this can illustrate that this magazine includes a lot of things. Where it says ‘Chelsea Clinton’ there is Gossip/News: Since women like gossip, here come eye catching news, this then illustrates that this magazine is open for women who want news.

Furthermore, on the left side of the front page the number “916” is a really big and eye catching number implying that there are lots of pages related to fashion, it is placed on the left top (third) which emphasis that it is important and also, to catch more attention to the potential audiences. Also, ‘Fashion’ is in a big font and a gold colour which connotes a luxury colour, suggesting that this magazine is amazing. This also then attracts women of all ages since it is the latest trend. In the cover line this magazine uses direct address “you” which attracts the attention of the reader and almost gets them involved by directing the question at the reader.

This cover magazine uses a rhetorical question on the left bottom cover line, this is used to get the reader thinking and also, this attracts more readers as the question answers itself as if you said yes. Additionally, the use of the mid shot for this cover image draws attention to her dress and it is eye catching because of the colour ‘purple’. Purple is stereotypically a female colour therefore, it attracts female readers.

SECOND ANALYSIS:

In this magazine the masthead is placed being the main picture, meaning that the company ‘Vogue’ is confident that people will recognise it even though it is not fully visible. The colour scheme has been kept within 3 standard colours; Pink, black and white. This is to empathise that this magazine is aimed at females. The colour pink is stereotypically a female’s colour; this attracts more potential female readers who have an interest in fashion. 

Also, an issue date is placed just below the title of the magazine; this is where all ‘Vogue’ magazines or fashion magazines place their issue dates. Furthermore, on the right hand side of the front cover page there are Hollywood gossip/ news; since females like to gossip, here comes eye catching news. The magazine is versatile ad is open for woman who want to read about all kinds of new/ the latest gossip.

On the left side of the front cover ‘Summer style’ is in a big font, all in capital letters and also, it is placed on the left third which is seen in most fashion magazines. As well as that it also is an alliteration, which makes it more attractive to look at. Also, the text ‘Fashions most fearless women’ mostly attracts the right type of audience, which are older teenagers. 

Additionally, ‘FAT OR FRICTION?’ is in bold black, which attracts the eye of the reader and also, gets the reader thinking as it is a rhetorical question.

Also, like many magazines; this magazine uses a Barcode placed on the front page however; some magazines may have the barcode at the back of the magazine.

Picture of ‘Scarlett Johansson’ is used to grab the eye of the targeted audience, which would be females that have an interest in fashion. The main front-page image has been placed right in between the page; It has been placed right in between the page. It is also a ¾ shot. Her face is in front of the masthead showing that the magazine is so well known that the audience can recognise the magazine’s title font. Also, the cell lines have been placed around her, framing her body.

Planning of music magazine

Magazine Music Genre: 
R&B mixed with a variety colours ; the reason for this is because as a group we have decided to have bright colours in the summer issue however, cool colours in the near winter issue as it creates the session atmosphere that we are looking for. 
Also, we have decided to go for the similar layout that all R&B magazines use because; it is more sophisticated and classy.

For example; this vibe magazine that i found:

This music magazine issue has bright colours to it that stand out, for example; yellow, light green, pink, light orange ect. However, it has that layout that my group were looking for, not all over the place, but neatly placed, like how R&B magazines covers have their layout.

We have decided that the font ‘Bauhaus 93’ gives a more music feel about the magazine so, we went along with it.
Also, We have decided to make the title colour dark purple for my issue and bright yellow for my partners title as it is eye catching, and draw the readers attention into the title as well as making the font in a BOLD text which then grabs the eye of the reader and makes the title more recognisable. However, the colour of the title of the magazine changes when it comes to different issues, for example; a summer (jun/july ect) would have a bright colour however, a winter (nov/dec ect) would be more to the darker colours.

Ideas for name

- Tempo   - Tune  - Chamber  -MM (music matters)  -MFT (music for them) 
 -TMM (the music magazine)

As a group we have chosen three simple eye catching titles, and three acronyms for the title as it would be effective and draw the attention of the reader.

Reason for acronmys as the title:
MFT (music for them) –
I used an acronym here because; it can be more effective and also, i thought what it could stand for. 'FHM' is a men's magazine which stands for 'For him magazine' so i thought i could combine my two idea's into 'Music For Them'. 'Them' could stand for everyone in the UK and worldwide.

TMM (the music magazine) –
This is a very simple and clear title, somtimes titles being simple can be effective because; it can be easier to remember for the audience. For example; QQ(the music magazine), it is simple and clear therefore, people recongnise and remember it.

MM (music matters) –
The title means a lot because music does matter. I shortened it to letters because; it would be more effective. The use of the repitition of the same letter could make it more memorable and eye catching as it attractes te attention of the potential audience.

However, the three simple titles are very casual and also, it could be a magazine to be easily remembered like for example; Vibe. This therefore illustrates that the most well-known magazines have simple and catchy titles.

As a group we have shortened the titles to the most appealing and effective title for us, which were 'Tune' and 'Chamber'. We then carried out a survey asking people in our school and out-side school from ages 14-24. The reason we are asking from ages 14-24 because; that is our target audience also, it isn't a small minority but, it wide range which would turn out to be very successful.

Looking at the results, we have come to a conclusion to have ‘Tune’ as the title of our music as it would attract more potential readers which will then make out magazine more successful also, the title 'TUNE' has a more music feel to it than 'chamber' as it draws in more potential readers.

My final college magazine: Preliminary Task

Self-Evaluation:

My brief was to produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriate laid-out text and a masthead. I have now completed all my production for my college front cover magazine. My production has become successful as it looks like a professional magazine that a school would publish and students would be attracted to pick up and have a read.

My strengths of this task was that I planned what my headlines was going to be and also, the colour that was suitable for the title and front cover. Also, I chose an appropriate font and colour for my title as it is really important that the title catches the eye of the reader so that it attracts more potential readers.

My title for my college magazine is in black and dark green on a light coloured background, in order for it to stand out and the font is large. Also, this is the basic codes and conventions for the title on any magazine page. This background layer of the title was darkened a little as I thought it stood out too much. For the background of my cover magazine; the gradient tool enabled me to fade this brick wall into a black background, making the edges look modernised.

I found trying to get the correct angle on my camera difficult, as I didn’t know which position was suitable. I then thought hard to when designing a front cover for my gcse production so; I tried getting my knowledge from that into this college magazine. At the end I decided to include two people from my as media class for my front cover, I then took the picture as a mid-shot and medium close-up as instructed in my brief.

I am new to the DTP software; in design as, I have never used this software. However, I went on tutorials on this website: “http://freecourses.tutsplus.com/introduction-to-magazine-design/”. It was very useful as it explained step-by-step how to use in design. I mostly found importing the image from the desktop to the software hard because; it would turn blurry every time I’d import the image for my front cover. Therefore, I resolved this by using these effective tutorials.

I chose the image of my two classmates holding a-level and writing books, wearing ID tags; this is to make it look like a real magazine that would be published in the school. I took the image as a medium mid-shot, this is because it was stated in my brief however, if it wasn’t specified in my brief I would of still chosen the medium mid-shot, because it is more suitable for a college magazine.

Similarities comparing my magazine and other professional magazines: My magazine has a bold title with a big font size like other professional magazines. Also, it has appropriate headlines on the right and left hand corner of the cover of the magazine. The barcode it included in my magazine which makes it look more professional as other high quality magazines use it. Professional magazines put issue dates in their magazines like popular fashion, sport, bakery ect magazines therefore, I put it right beneath my title as that’s where is it mostly placed. Also, the background image I used is a medium shot which all college magazines use; this therefore makes it look very specialist.

Differences comparing my magazine and other professional magazines: I put a small sentence at the bottom of my cover page which not all professional magazines use; however, I thought I would attract a lot more potential readers. Also, the first headline I used on the left is ‘10+ ways to help you revise’, I made the ‘10+’ font size bigger than the ‘ways to help you revise’ size as it creates a positive effect on the readers as it makes the ‘10+’ stand out however, not all professional magazines use it which makes it unique and draws attention to the potential audiences.

Additionally, If I were to do this magazine again; I would of changed my chose of colour of my headlines and make it stand out a bit more or make it more readable, because mostly the colours I used was black and white, however, I could have made my colour of my headlines more colourful and thought of an appropriate colour. Also, I would have made the headlines not overlap the front cover image; because this makes it look unprofessional.

Also, If I had more time to complete this task, I would have used Photoshop to change the background by cutting the image and importing it to another page in photoshop, then blending a darker shade background with the main image, making it look more realistic and professional.

Finally, if I would of stretched the subtitle at the bottom of the magazine; “The magazine recommended by the Ealing council”. To make it focus on it more so it would draw in more potential readers however, not too stretched as it wouldn’t look as professional as it should.

Results of questionnaire:

Question 1- most people answered they wanted the sixth form magazine to contain school info, lots of images and news. 

Question 2- the most popular answer was they read magazines for entertainment and information. 

Question 3- The majority of people answered they wanted yes to colour and yes to images.

Question 4 everyone except two people wanted the magazine to have the magazine published once a month.

Question 5 There was a very mixed answer of how much they would be prepared to pay for the magazine ranging from £1 to £1.50 to £2.
